FLASH ART May/June 1998

JOHANNESBURG

Goings On

“A Changed World” is the British Council’s latest traveling exhibition of young Brit art.  In Johannesburg, the show marks 40 years of their presence in South African, hmmm.  The exhibition is all over the place in terms of artists and weak on representing the artists participating.  Evidently, Saatchi got all the good pieces.  However, some of the players are there: Rachel Whiteread, Damien Hirst, and Gilbert and George, among others.  There are works that may not have been seen here before but they are certainly not the best.  To 30 May.

CORRECTION: It was reported in the March April issue of Flash Art that Richard Mann was appointed the director of the Guggenheim Johannesburg.  There is no such institution.  Apparently we fell victim to a hoax.  Boy does Owen Drolet feel stupid.
