Inaugural exhibition for the new Michigan Institute for the Arts (MIA)Aug. 7 – Sept. 18, 2004Opening Reception: Saturday Aug. 14, 7-10pm
PROLOGUE: Collaborative and solo paintings from Ann Gordon and Jessica EricksonThe Museum of New Art (MONA) and The Michigan Institute for Arts (MIA) are proud to present the collaborative and individual works of art by Metro Detroit artists Ann Gordon and Jessica Erickson. Ann Gordon (BFA College for Creative Studies) and Jessica Erickson (BFA Arizona State University) have created a visual dialogue with each other on the same canvas, taking turns at brush and palette as they respond to each others inquiry into painting and so art itself. The museum patron will encounter a combination of approaches, styles, techniques, environments, past and present histories – all executed through this working dialogue expressed through the reworking, reflecting, and reacting of each artist on a single surface. These collaborative paintings form an immediate and interactive critique, creating new ideas and approaches while striving to inspire and broaden the common understanding of both the artists and the viewer. The Michigan Institute for the Arts (MIA) will present the collaborative work while the Museum of New Art (MONA) will exhibit the solo paintings. Both institutions are now housed at 7 North Saginaw Pontiac, MI. MIA is located on the first floor of the Oakland Arts Building and MONA is on the second and third floor.
