Ich bin ein Detroiter:
German artists exchange visual works with Detroiters at MONA
We are always on the lookout for new ways to
describe the Detroit vibe. Here's one we especially like, found
in Metro Times Art Critic
Rebecca Mazzei's piece last week about the
Museum of
New Art's Changing Cities series. Mazzei wrote that
"the city has an 'atmosphere of departure,' according to Eva
Bracke, who owns a gallery in the heart of Berlin's most popular
contemporary art district.
"She's not talking about a sense of panic floating in the air,
spurring Detroiters to pack their bags. She's referring to our
community's unconventional state of mind.
'It's really fresh. It's like Berlin a few years ago, before it
turned into an art metropolis,' Bracke says. 'Anything is
possible and that's exciting.'
Well, darn, Eva, thank you. We couldn't have said it any better.

Jef
Bourgeau's exhibit showcases work by the emerging talents in
Bracke's stable alongside that of a dozen Detroiters. As part of
Bourgeau's Changing Cities project, the Detroiters' art
will then ship to Bracke's Berlin gallery for an exhibit opening
November 29..
Some of the visiting artists showing work include Olivia
Berckemeyer, Christoph Dettmeier, Florin Kompatscher, Andrew
Gilbert, Alexej Koschkarow; along with Detroiters Mary Fortuna,
Kelly Frank, Cyrus Karimpour and Alison Wong.
Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.
Museum of New Art is at 7 N. Saginaw, Pontiac. The show is up
until Aug. 9.
