painting is dead

In painting you try to force something to happen. In photography you find it. We live in a world of the moment, where things happen. Painting is indirect, photography is direct. Photography is not so much a statement about the world, but a piece of it. Photography is the only art that challenges and refreshes its viewer's response to the world. Painting. Painting is dead!

CANCELED

nigger:

the american experience

photograph by lyle ashton harris

N-- is the filthiest, dirtiest, nastiest word in the English language.

N-- focuses on questions of identity, racism and social injustice in our culture and in our nation's history.

N-- is about a handful of uniquely American artists who deal with shocking images that lurk in the subconscious, and whose art exposes the contradictions and tensions of race in America.
