Cranbrook Academy of Art Masters of Fine Art (MFA) candidates will show innovative new works in the exhibition “Side by Side: New Works from the Cranbrook Photography Studios” at the Museum of New Art, Detroit/Pontiac, from 8 March through 11 April 2008.

The exhibition will include works from fourteen artists whose research and current studio practice is

based out of the Cranbrook photography program headed by artist-in-residence, David Hilliard. Works include prints-on-paper, video, and installations that examine the boundless possibilities of contemporary photographic practice.

Side by Side: New Works from the Cranbrook Photography Studios, shows objects, ideas, and insight that illustrate the program’s philosophy through the collective and individual vision of participating artists. The photography program at Cranbrook explains: “Paramount in the creation of a photograph is that the artist remains true to their inspiration and personal vision. Achieving this goal is central to the Photography Department at Cranbrook. Students are challenged to remain focused on this vision and resist the allure of the expected and the morass of mass appeal. This quest can be both exciting and challenging. The Photography Department seeks to develop and define each student’s unique perspective.”
